The Laurel Avenue area of Ballybrack had suffered from housing deprivation since the 1990s. Much of the existing local authority housing stock had proved inappropriate to respond to existing and new family needs.
DLRCC commissioned GCA to survey the housing stock and to prepare a variety of responses varying from the refurbishment and conversion of existing buildings to the demolition and reconfiguration of the neighbourhood.
This process involved extensive client and community consultations, liaison and feedback resulting in the design and procurement of 61 new build houses and 16 apartments built in three phases. The dwellings have been designed to maximise orientation and passive solar gain; respond to the topography of the site and create as far as practical a barrier free environment.
