Site location: Portrane, Lucan, Co Dublin

In 1997, the Eastern Health Board (EHB), now the HSE, commissioned GCA to design the new Special Care Units for Children on sites to the north and south of Dublin. These proposals involved the provision of secure residential accommodation for twenty-four children in a campus style environment. Each campus has three residential houses each with an en-suite bedroom per child with shared living, dining and recreation space. In addition each setting has a six classroom educational building, a gymnasium, a games room and an administration building.

The buildings are designed to be domestic in scale but detailed to provide a safe environment. The external west facing contained garden is intended to have a variety of landscaped settings and games facilities.
