Apartments at New Street, Dublin 8
Client - NABCo. (National Association of Building Co-operatives Society Ltd.)
New Street, in Dublin 8, was a traditional city street which had its east side demolished to facilitate the creation of an urban dual carriageway. The resulting site left over between the widened road and the exposed backs of the adjacent housing set a design challenge to GCA regarding how to create a new street frontage at a city scale whilst providing a variety of dwellings organised around a west facing garden.
This scheme involved the construction in two phases of a co-operative housing scheme comprising 57 no. 1, 2 & 3 bedroom apartments and communal facilities and tenant management rooms. The building makes a strong formal elevation to New Street. To the rear this formality breaks down to create layers of semi-private and private open space in the form of gardens, terraces, balconies and wintergardens.
