The Trident Hotel was originally designed by the Limerick firm of Clifford Smith & Newenham Architects, and was opened on the site of O Callaghans’ Boatyard, on Kinsale Harbour 1964. The original avant–garde design had been considerably modified over the years, and by the 1990s, the hotel was in need of complete refurbishment, as both styles and standards had changed since Kinsale first became a tourist destination in the early 1960s.

The refurbished design consists of re-ordered entrances to the Hotel Reception and Restaurant, re-cladding and enlargement of the entire hotel envelope, refurbishment and enlargement to the existing two floors of accommodation, and the construction of a new storey of 19 additional rooms, (bringing the total to 75 Bedrooms) along with additional Staff and Customer facilities. All the bedrooms are finished to 4 star standards of accommodation.
