Private House, Churchtown, Dublin
This refurbishment and extension of a compact semi-detached house in suburban Dublin consisted of the provision of new living and kitchen facilities and a master bedroom within en-suite bathrooms. The adjoining garage to the front was demolished to allow for a two storey new-build extension. This houses a study on ground floor with the zinc bay window under a new bedroom to the first floor. Consideration was given to the existing facade within the scale of openings and materials. These were altered and adapted to establish a distinction between the existing and new.
A new two and one-storey extension to the rear allows a large open space between the kitchen and family room, with framed views of the garden. Built-in bookshelves and a sliding frosted glass door provide flexible separation. As the back of the house is northeast facing, the family room and master bedroom above enjoy large double height spaces and employ oversized openings and clerestory glazing where possible. The chosen materials were brick and painted render for the external fabric, with zinc roofs gutters and cills. Western red cedar cladding was used as external cladding with in-situ concrete and slate for landscaping elements.
