Housing at Donabate, Co. Dublin
Sophia Housing Association in conjunction with Fingal County Council, identified a need for a supported transitional housing programme in the Fingal area. A small supported community of starter homes for young families with access to various communal facilities, support staff and training was built and opened by President McAleese in 2005.
The project consists of twenty houses, a crèche, meeting/training rooms, staff facilities, caretaker facilities and a caretakers apartment on a site of approximately one acre.
The two terraces of accommodation are designed to complement and contrast. The curved block to the west is characterised by the vertical rhythm of entry and accommodation in each house, the rear of the dwellings designed to eliminate overlooking. This block is found to the road by communal and meeting rooms.
To the east the straight block has horizontal emphasis of timber clad halls and screens terminating in the ‘hidden’ colour washed room of the children’s creche and play garden.
