The Mercy Convent in Cork Street has a long tradition of caring for the vulnerable and the needy. In 2000 the Sisters agreed for Sophia Housing to take over the convent and associated accommodation whilst continuing to provide a home for the elderly residents.
GCA worked with Sophia to design and build new and refurbished accommodation for 27 single people and 23 families on the context of the retention of existing structures and the continuation of the convent garden as a place of sanctuary. In addition to the dwellings the new community at Cork Street also has communal meeting and support rooms together with a “Wisdom Centre” - an old timber clad structure set in a reflecting pond to provide a place of reflection for residents and visitors alike.
